BOSTON -- The Boston Phoenix, the 47-year-old alternative weekly newspaper and flagship of The Phoenix Media/Communications Group, will cease publication.
Owner and publisher Stephen Mindich announced Thursday that the March 15 issue will be the last print edition of the Phoenix; the online issue scheduled for March 22 will be its final online publication.
He said the company plans to keep publishing the Providence and Portland, Maine, versions of the Phoenix for as long as they're financially viable. A news release indicated the Providence Phoenix will add four full-time positions and several free-lancers.
Mindich said the company had been unable to reverse the significant financial losses in Boston incurred since 2007.
