PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- The state chapter of the American Civil Liberties Union and a several criminal defense organizations are weighing in on Governor Chafee's custody battle over accused killer and possible death-penalty candidate Jason Pleau.
Federal public defender offices in Rhode Island, Massachusetts, Maine and New Hampshire are among the entities that joined the ACLU in support of Chafee's opposition to a federal appeals court ruling forcing the state to surrender Pleau to face federal prosecution and possibly the death penalty for his alleged crimes.
Chafee is seeking a U.S. Supreme Court review of the appeals ruling.
Pleau is accused of conspiring with two others to rob a gas station manager making a bank deposit in September 2010. Prosecutors say Pleau was the masked gunman who fatally shot David Main.
