WOONSOCKET, R.I. -- The deal to sell Landmark Medical Center to Steward Health Care System may be falling apart.

In a court filing this week, Jonathan N. Savage, the special master in charge of the hospital, made reference to the possibility that Steward would withdraw. The Boston hospital group faces a Sept. 30 deadline to complete the sale.

Hospital spokesman Bill Fischer said Landmark has not formally withdrawn but the hospital is preparing for the possibility. "Mr. Savage has been in discussions with other parties to ensure the hospital continues to operate for the foreseeable future," Fischer said. "The feedback from those discussions has been very positive."

Landmark has been in receivership for more than four years, and the Steward deal has been in the works since 2009.
