EAST GREENWICH, R.I. -- The New England Institute of Technology announced Monday a new shipbuilding training program using a $2.5 million U.S. Department of Labor grant.

The Shipbuilding/Marine Advanced Manufacturing Institute will provide training for 400 people who are unemployed, the Institute reported in a news release, and will be federally funded for at least three years. The goal is to train people for jobs as welders, machinists, pipefitters, etc.

The program was developed in coordination with General Dynamics, Senesco Marine and the R.I. Manufacturing Institute, among other organizations.

Training begins at the Institute's Warwick campus in August. Candidates will be sought through veterans groups and agencies serving the unemployed.

Others may contact the Institute directly, calling or writing Fred Santaniello: 401-739-5000 or fsantaniello@neit.com.
