Mother and two children seriously injured when car hits bridge in Coventry

COVENTRY, R.I. -- A mother and her two young children were seriously injured around 4:30 p.m. Tuesday when their car left the eastbound lane of Plainfield Pike and struck a part of the Fairbanks Bridge, not far from Route 117.

Police Lt. Gary Miller said one of the younger of the two children, believed to be around 16-months-old, was taken to Hasbro Children's Hospital, while the older child was taken first to Kent County Hospital and then Hasbro. Their mother was taken to Rhode Island Hospital.

Miller said he had no information about their conditions as of 9 p.m., and that the accident remained under investigation.
