WARWICK, R.I. -- Former Providence Journal photographer John Freidah received a Media Award for Outstanding Coverage on Monday for his photographs and video portraying the plight of the state's homeless population.
Freidah received the award from the Rhode Island Coalition for the Homeless at the organization's 2013 awards luncheon at the Crowne Plaza hotel. The organizers showed part of Freidah's recent Journal documentary on the homeless, "More than a place to sleep," at the event, which attracted about 400 advocates, officials, and Rhode Island congressmen.
The coalition also presented awards to Susan Bodington, deputy director of programs at Rhode Island Housing; Paula Lynch, a volunteer lawyer with the Homeless Legal Clinic; Christina Amedeo, director of programs for United Way 2-1-1 of Rhode Island, and Eileen Hayes, president and CEO of Amos House.
