PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- Heeding a call from the Diocese of Rhode Island, a number of Episcopal churches plan to offer "hot cross buns to go" Thursday and Saturday to mark the end of Lent.

The Diocese says sharing hot cross buns is a nearly 300-year-old Anglican tradition that could ensure friendship particularly if two people say: "Half for you and half for me, between us two shall goodwill be."

Some say it is also advisable to kiss before the bun be consumed.

On Thursday, St. Augustine's Church plans to offer buns outside the University of Rhode Island's Memorial Union starting at 9 a.m., while St. Peter's and St. Andrew's Church on Pomona Ave., Providence, plans to distribute buns at its food pantry and dinner.
