PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- A 20-year-old Providence man was shot to death in the city early Wednesday evening.

Police Cmdr. Thomas F. Oates III said the police were called about a shooting at 6:40 p.m. on Dudley Street, near Tanner Street, and found the man lying on the ground suffering from a gunshot.

The man was rushed by ambulance to Rhode Island Hospital, where he was pronounced dead, Oates said.

The police were withholding his identity until his family was notified of his death. The man was known by police, Oates said. The circumstances of the shooting weren't immediately known.

This is the first homicide in the city this year.
