PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- Some 25 percent of public school buildings in Rhode Island are in fair to poor condition, according to a report released Friday.

The Public Schoolhouse Assessment, the state's first, according to the Department of Education, assessed 276 school buildings. Of those, 68 were deemed "good," 137 "generally good," 39 "fair to poor," and 14 "poor."

Some 70 percent of public buildings in the state were built between 1928 and 1978.

"While we face a formidable challenge because of the aging infrastructure of many of our school buildings, our communities can also take advantage of resources and ideas," Chafee said. "The report we are releasing today contains many key recommendations."
