PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- An 18-year-old Providence man accused of fatally stabbing another man in Kennedy Plaza Tuesday night has been ordered held without bail.
Diamond J. Wilson Wooten, of 41 Parente St., was arraigned Wednesday in District Court on a charge of murdering Charlie Otero, 18 of Daboll Street in Providence.
Providence Police Detective Capt. Michael E. Correia said that the two had an ongoing dispute. Last month, Otero's 13-year-old sister accused Wooten of punching her in the face, Correia said.
On Tuesday night, Wooten and Otero happened to run into each other at Kennedy Plaza as they were taking different buses home. Wooten pursued Otero, Correia said.
The police were first called at 9:15 p.m. about a fight at Bus Stop M, where one man was seen chasing another down Washington Street toward Exchange Street.
Five minutes later, Otero stumbled into McCormick & Schmick's restaurant, where he collapsed bleeding from a stab wound in his chest, Oates said. He told police he'd been in a fight with "Diamond," a prosecutor said at Wooten's arraignment Wednesday. Otero lived long enough to say Diamond's name and describe him, but died later that night at Rhode Island Hospital, the prosecutor told Judge Walter Gorman.
Police found Wooten within minutes nearby on Westminster and Dorrance streets, Oates said. Wooten had been stabbed in the shoulder and back.
Wooten was treated at Rhode Island Hospital, under police guard, and then brought to the Public Safety Complex for investigation.
