PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- State Rep. Patricia Morgan, R-West Warwick, has filed a bill in the Rhode Island House of Representatives that would allow the Coventry Town Council to temporarily contract for fire and emergency services for the Central Coventry Fire District.
The financially-troubled district, which serves 18,000 people, is due to shut down as of midnight, April 11.
Morgan's bill would authorize the Town Council to collect the balance due on district tax bills, and use the money to provide fire and emergency services up to Sept. 1. If the General Assembly approves the measure, the voters of the fire district would vote on the proposal by June 1.
