COVENTRY, R.I. -- In a special meeting Tuesday night, the Town Council approved a loan up to $300,000 to keep the cash-strapped Central Coventry Fire District alive at least until May 15. The district was scheduled to close at midnight Thursday.

Council president Gary P. Cote told the standing room crowd that there would be no public comment, bringing a torrent of jeers and boos from the audience. "Where's the democracy?" someone yelled.

The vote was 4 to 1, with council member Karen M. Carlson in opposition.

By the time Governor Chafee arrived at Coventry's Town Hall, the vote was over. "I'm pleased by the vote," Chafee said when told the result. "We need some time."
