Today in RI history: Newport preps for America's Cup

A year ago today:
Construction crews are working at Fort Adams State Park on $1.2 million in state taxpayer-financed improvements, as Newport prepares to host the America's Cup World Series races in June.

5 years ago today:
Norman V. Langelier shot and killed his wife, Beatrice Langelier, and then set off a series of propane explosions that took his own life and unleashed a storm of fire in the couple's home, Cumberland Police Chief John Desmarais says. Norman Langelier left a note saying, "Firemen, please do not enter. Explosives, gunpowder, ammo inside the house."

25 years ago today:
Ground is broken for Providence's river relocation, an ambitious $40 million project to move two tributaries of the Providence River and uncover them for public view.
