PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- Navy Week will not be coming to Rhode Island due to federal spending cuts, Navy officials announced Thursday.
Outreach activities -- including a port visit and the Blue Angels' appearance at the Rhode Island National Guard Air Show -- had been planned for June 24-July 5.
Local, smaller-scale outreach efforts are being planned, a Navy spokeswoman said.
Navy Week brings sailors and a wide array of equipment to a city for about a week, officials said in a news release. In addition to the Blue Angels, activities may include the Navy Parachute Team (the Leap Frogs), construction units (SEABEES) and namesake ship crews. The Navy had not yet decided what ship or port would be part of its Rhode Island appearance.
