NEWPORT, R.I. (AP) -- Surfers and environmentalists are planning to meet with the state Department of Transportation and others to discuss concerns that work to repair Newport's famous Cliff Walk could damage one of New England's best surfing spots and the environment.
The meeting is scheduled for Friday afternoon.
The state estimates the Cliff Walk received $8 million in damage in Superstorm Sandy. The department has suggested building jetties so the repair work can be done from the ocean.
But members of the community say that could damage the surf break that gives the city's most famous mansion, The Breakers, its name. They want less work done on the walk.
Drew Carey, a member of Clean Ocean Access, says they will present an assessment of the state's plan at Friday's meeting.
