PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) -- About 20,000 anglers are expected to turn out for the first day of the freshwater fishing season in Rhode Island.

Saturday is opening day for trout and general freshwater fishing. The state Department of Environmental Management planned to stock about 80,000 hatchery-raised trout in more than 100 ponds and streams.

Cass Pond in Woonsocket, Slater Park Pond in Pawtucket and Ponderosa Park Pond in Little Compton will be open just for children this weekend. "Opening Day" fishing derbies are also being held Saturday for children in several locations.

State officials are warning fishermen of cold water temperatures. Even on warm days, the water can be in the 50s. The U.S. Coast Guard says boating accidents are five times more likely to be fatal if water temperatures fall below 60 degrees.
