The Rhode Island Resource Recovery Corporation in Johnston receives recyclables from all over Rhode Island. Trucks roll up and dump, conveyor belts move out, and fork lifts transport as they then sift, sort and bale recyclable items to ship them out to customers all over the world. These customers, in Canada, Europe, China, as well as in the U.S., buy the material for repurposing and remanufacturing. The money earned with the resale of this material is split 50/50 with the communities they came from.
Sarah Kite, director of recycling services at RIRRC explains how it works.
