PROVIDENCE - The House Finance Committee approved a bill that would keep the broke Coventry Central Fire District in business using last year's budget.
The bill, which now goes to the House floor, could avoid the day when the district's 18,000 residents could find themselves with no fire protection.
The district is in receivership after its voters repeatedly refused to pass budgets that would let it continue operating. The district has been faced with liquidation, meaning that the district would have to shut down and its assets, including its fire trucks, be sold to pay creditors.
