Democrat Erskine Bowles, onetime deputy chief of staff to President Bill Clinton, has endorsed Republican Brendan Doherty for Congress, the former state police superintendent's campaign announced Tuesday.
Bowles endorsed Doherty over Democratic Rep. David Cicilline in a joint statement with former Sen. Alan Simpson, his GOP co-chairman on the bipartisan commission that President Obama created to suggest ways to cut the federal deficit. Doherty supports their recommendations.
"Brendan has put partisanship aside by being willing to step forward to make tough decisions our nation needs. He's a brave leader who deserves the thanks of everyone who really cares about our nation's future," Bowles and Simpson said in the statement released by Doherty's campaign.
Bowles may be the most prominent Democrat to endorse Doherty so far.
