Today in RI history: Land preserved on Block Island

A year ago today:
The Warwick police SWAT team forces its way into a room at the Motel 6 on Jefferson Boulevard, where two men had barricaded themselves in. One of the men in the room told the police he had a bomb and a weapon.

5 years ago today:
The Roman Catholic Diocese of Providence acknowledges in a court document of having more than twice as many priests -- 125 -- accused of sexual misconduct in recent decades than it had ever publicly acknowledged.

25 years ago today:
The Block Island Land Trust, which marks its first anniversary this month, has helped preserve portions of the Mitchell Farm off Corn Neck Road and the Turnip Farm north of Old Mill Road.
