PROVIDENCE -- A 22-year old Silver Lake man was wounded in a drive-by shooting on Monday afternoon on Sterling Avenue in the city's Silver Lake neighborhood.
Detective Capt. Michael E. Correia said that Nicholas Villafane, of 217 Sterling Ave., suffered gunshot wounds to his buttocks and right leg about 12:15 p.m. Witnesses told the police that a black Nissan Maxima raced past and opened fire on Villafane.
The police said that he was brought to Rhode Island Hospital, where he is expected to recover from his wounds.
Correia said that Villafane is a known gang member, but he declined to identify the gang. Records show that he has an extensive record and has served time in the Adult Correctional Institutions for breaking and entering and selling a stolen handgun.
Villafane is the 18th person shot in the city this month and the 53rd this year. Three of this month's victims, including a 12-year old girl, have died.
