PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- Governor Chafee is proposing to make another new addition to the state Public Utilities Commission.

Chafee has nominated lawyer Herbert F. DeSimone Jr. to replace Mary E. Bray on the three-member quasi-judicial panel that regulates electric, natural gas, telephone and other services.

Last month, Chafee nominated former U.S. Attorney Margaret E. "Meg" Curran as the new chairwoman of the commission, replacing Elia Germani, who had served in the position for 13 years. Curran's appointment was approved by the Senate Commerce Committee last week and is set to go before the full Senate on Wednesday.

DeSimone, whose father, Herbert DeSimone Sr., served as Rhode Island Attorney General from 1967 to 1971, was an assistant city solicitor in Providence from 1981 to 1984. He was a finalist for a District Court judgeship in 2008.

Bray, a former Pawtucket City Council president, was appointed to the PUC in 2005.
