CRANSTON, R.I. -- The Rhode Island Emergency Management issued an updated list of cooling centers that will be open during the next few days to help Rhode Islanders cope with the high heat, saying there will now be 37 cooling centers in 17 communities.
The mass of hot, humid air moving across the area has already prompted the agency to issue an air-quality alert in anticipations of higher concentrations of ground-level ozone. The high ozone levels can cause throat irritation, coughing, chest pain, shortness of breath, increased susceptibility to respiratory infections and asthma.
As announced earlier regular RIPTA bus and trolley service will remain free Tuesday.
