WOODS HOLE, Mass. -- The U.S. Coast Guard offers safety tips for the July Fourth week, which traditionally sees the most boating traffic of the year.
In an effort to prevent accidents and deaths, Commander Paul Lattanzi, chief of the Sector New England prevention department, issued the following tips:
-- Have a life jacket for everyone aboard. Children's life jackets are available for borrowing at the BoatUS Foundation's Free Kids Loaner program.
-- Be patient. Go slowly after fireworks shows end, post extra lookouts on the way home, and be prepared for delays at the launch ramp.
-- Be aware that in fresh water, very small amounts of 120-volt AC current can kill. Never allow children to swim in a marina, or swim near a private dock unless you are sure it is without electrical service, or the power has been shut off.
-- The most common reason for breakdowns requiring a tow are dead batteries and propeller entanglements. Make sure batteries are fully charged, and keep lines away from propellers.
-- Being on the water all day can enhance the effects of alcohol, so drink lots of water and wait until you've safely made it home before imbibing.
