PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- Legislation backed by abortion opponents to create a "Choose Life" license plate cleared the Rhode Island General Assembly Tuesday night with a final vote of 22 to 14 in the Senate.
The bill now heads to Governor Chafee for consideration.
The measure, which emerged late in the session and provoked sharp debate, would split proceeds from the plate between the state and the local chapter of CareNet RI, the local chapter of a Christian group that opposes abortion.
