UPPER MARLBORO, Md. (AP) -- A Connecticut man serving multiple life sentences for a series of sexual assaults has appeared remotely in a Prince George's County court.

Aaron Thomas was arraigned Friday on charges of first-degree rape and other offenses, appearing in court via closed circuit television.

Thomas is accused of being the "East Coast Rapist" for a series of assaults over more than a decade from Rhode Island to Virginia.

He was sentenced in March to multiple life terms in Virginia for crimes including the abduction and rapes of teenage trick-or-treaters in 2009.

That same month, he was indicted in Prince George's County for assaults that occurred between 1997 and 2001.

He faces a status hearing on Aug. 16 and will remain at the county detention center for the duration of the case.
