Birders from all over the Northeast are flocking to Jamestown this week to view an extremely rare wood sandpiper.
The bird breeds in wetlands from the Scottish Highlands, across Europe, and Asia. "This is just the seventh record for the Lower 48," according to an American Birding Association blog.
Bird watcher Carlos Pedro discovered the Eurasian bird at Marsh Meadow Wildlife Preserve, off North Road.
When news of the sighting hit the Internet, birders inundated the marsh near Zeek's Creek fish market. "You couldn't find a place to park for a mile," said Ed Hughes, North Kingstown's harbor master and an ardent wildlife photographer.
