PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- One of two ranking corrections officers convicted of assaulting and abusing inmates at the Adult Correctional Institutions continues to collect a monthly retirement pension that tops $4,000.
Joy Fox, spokeswoman for General Treasurer Gina M. Raimondo, said that Kenneth Viveiros, 65, a former lieutenant in minimum security, has $4,015.60 sent via direct deposit to his bank account each month. That's $48,187-a-year.
Viveiros worked for the state prison system for nearly 27 years. In November, Judge Daniel A. Procaccini ordered Viveiros to spend nine months in prison and he suspended the remaining 27 months of his sentence. He has been transferred to a prison outside of Rhode Island.
On Thursday, Procaccini ordered Gualter Botas, a former captain in minimum security, to serve 18 months in prison with the remaining 18 months suspended. Raimondo's spokeswoman said that Botas withdrew his pension contributions in June 2008 and is no longer part of the state retirement system.
Both corrections officers were fired on Feb. 12, 2007, just days after they were first convicted of simple assault in District Court.
