BURRILLVILLE, R.I. -- Citing "driver error" and "driver inattention" as the main factors in three crashes that recently left three people dead and eight injured on Route 102, Police Chief Stephen J. Lynch announced a plan Friday to beef up patrols along the busy highway.
Also in the works, he said, will be a social media campaign and an outreach in local schools to inform both young people and adults about the dangers of distracted driving.
In a news conference at the police station, Robert Rocchio, the Department of Transportation's chief engineer, said the installation of "rumble strips" between the north and southbound lanes and more signs to alert drivers of approaching intersections are among the improvements that could help to make the highway safer.
