PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- Five people have been displaced in an overnight house fire in the city's Mt. Pleasant neighborhood, fire officials said.

Firefighters were dispatched to 11 Waller St., a two-family converted bungalow, when the homeowner noticed smoke, Acting Battalion Chief Jeff Varone said.

By the time firefighters arrived, Varone said, the homeowner along with a couple and two children on the second floor had left the building. No injuries were reported, Varone said.

A malfunctioning refrigerator in the basement started the fire, which was contained to the basement, fire officials said. Moderate damage was reported throughout the building, primarily due to smoke.

National Grid was called to discontinue electrical power.
