PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- A worker who fell from the Mount Hope Bridge Tuesday morning has died, the area director for the federal Occupational Safety & Health Administration confirmed Tuesday afternoon.
Patrick Griffin said the Rhode Island OSHA office got a call between 8:30 and 9 a.m. Tuesday from the Bristol Police. "They held the scene," he said. The investigation is in its early stages, he said, with a compliance officer assigned to the case.
The fall was 75 feet, Griffin said.
David Darlington, executive director of the Rhode Island Turnpike and Bridge Authority, issued a statement late Tuesday afternoon, saying:
"On behalf of the board of directors and employees of the Rhode Island Turnpike and Bridge Authority, I would like to extend our deepest sympathies to the worker's family, friends, colleagues and loved ones for their loss."
