The state Department of Health will receive $5.9 million to help prepare for a wide range of public health threats, including natural disasters, terrorist attacks and disease outbreaks.

"This is a sound investment in bolstering public safety. In the wake of superstorm Sandy and the Boston bombings, this federal funding will help ensure the Rhode Island Department of Health and local hospitals can respond quickly and effectively when a major disaster strikes," said U.S. Sen. Jack Reed.

The state's first responders and hospital staff "must have the resources they need to respond quickly and effectively," added U.S. Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse.

The federal grants are administered by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.
