NEWPORT, R.I. -- Horseplay, a nonprofit group from North Kingstown that rescues equines, will host its Midsummer Gala at the Elks Lodge at 141 Pelham St., Newport from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. Saturday to raise money to maintain the 25 horses in its care. The event costs $20 and includes food and live music.
The rescue operation, which Deidre Sharp runs out of 82-acres she rents from 143 Gilbert Stuart Rd., accepts unwanted, abused or neglected equine. Several of the horses are former polo horses, show horses, race horses and family pets. Since its beginning in 1999, the rescue has helped 247 horses.
The nonprofit is supported by donations and grants and is staffed by volunteers but a poor economy has lead to a dramatic drop in donations and a significant rise in the price of hay and feed, Sharp said. It has also made it difficult for some horse owners to continue caring for their horses.
