SCITUATE, R.I. -- A North Kingstown woman was arrested Friday on charges related to transferring more than $200,000 to herself while she had power of attorney over the affairs of her father, who was in an assisted living facility.
Barbara Flaherty, 49, of 70 Sedgefield Rd., North Kingstown, was charged with larceny from a person over the age of 65, exploitation of an elder and accessing a computer for fraudulent purposes, Rhode Island State Police Maj. Todd E. Catlow said in a news release Friday.
An investigation indicates that Flaherty used the money to pay her personal expenses, and that she used a credit card on her father's account to spend more than $12,000 at restaurants and stores while failing to pay for her father's care. By May 2011, he owed the facility more than $100,000.
She has a pre-arraignment conference in Providence Superior Court on Aug. 23.
