PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- The Department of Health has announced that a second calf that had been living in a pasture next to Gray's Ice Cream in Tiverton has died.
Health departments in both Massachusetts and Rhode Island had already started screening calls from area residents who believe they may have had contact with another cow during visits to the popular ice cream parlor between July 5 and 21 to see if they are in need of rabies shots. That animal, a 3-month old calf named Oreo, bit a child on July 15 and died six days later while under a quarantine.
Officials said they were unable to test that calf for rabies because the carcass arrived too late to conduct tests.
This time, health officials have the tissues and expect to have the results of the second calf by Saturday.
Officials say that anyone with concerns can call the Department of Health at 222-2577.
