RI Gov Chafee to visit state's 1st recovery high school

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) -- Rhode Island Governor Chafee is celebrating the opening of the state's first high school for students who have completed substance abuse treatment has opened.

Chafee and other state leaders plan to visit the Anchor Learning Academy Wednesday. It's known as a "recovery high school" and is designed to help students who have had substance abuse problems focus on their academics while maintaining their recovery.

Enrollment at the school is capped at 20 students. So far, the school has four students but administrators expect the number to increase quickly.

The recovery school is operating on a two-year pilot basis.

The Providence Center says there are 35 recovery high schools in 10 states.
