Coventry, R.I. -- Dolores Isabella and Marcia Kaye were married at about 10:35 Thursday morning at the Westwood Estates Clubhouse.
Former state representative John R. Assalone performed the ceremony, which he said is Coventry's first same-sex marriage. Assalone said he's known the couple for more than 20 years. "They're great people, and I'm glad I did it," he said.
In East Providence, singers and music teachers Eric Bronner and Vaugh Bryner were first in line when City Hall opened at 8 a.m. Thursday. The two were joined in a civil union in 2011, and converted their civil union into a marriage.
"We did it to fully express the love of our union, with recognition from the state and the nation," said Bronner, who turns 53 on Saturday. "For us, it's a civil rights issue, and a patriotic duty. . . I am a citizen of this country, and I want the same rights and recognition as any other citizen."
