PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- A man was hospitalized after he was struck with a machete early Saturday during a fight over an alleged insult to a girlfriend, the police said.
Maj David A. Lapatin said that two men became involved in a dispute with a third man at Amici, a sports bar on Atwells Avenue, at about 1:45 a.m. over whether one of them, later identified as Steven Fordham, 27, of Taunton, had insulted another man's girlfriend. A bouncer escorted Fordham outside, but the other two attacked Fordham. The fight spilled into the street, the police said.
The fight moved across the street to a parking lot. Fordham allegedly went to his car, retrieved a machete and starting chasing one of his assailants, later identified as Marquis Gallop, 27, of Providence, striking him in the left forearm. The injury was serious enough to hospitalize Gallop, Lapatin said. He was in stable condition at Rhode Island Hospital Saturday afternoon.
Lapatin said Fordham fled in his car, with the gathered crowd throwing rocks at the car, breaking the rear window.
He was stopped later on Route 495 by the Massachusetts state police. Lapatin said his department will seek a warrant to return Fordham to Rhode Island, where he will likely be charged with assault with a dangerous weapon. Fordham was being held at the Massachusetts state police barracks in Foxboro.
