PAWTUCKET, R.I. (AP) -- Two small mixed-breed dogs are recovering from injuries suffered in an attack by a pit bull in Pawtucket, where that breed is banned.

Ray Clement tells WJAR-TV his dogs, Petey, a white Jack Russell mix, and Holly, a black mini pincher were attacked during a walk last Tuesday, when the pit bull broke away from its owner and jumped them.

Both of Clement's dogs are recovering from puncture wounds.

Pit bulls are banned in Pawtucket, despite a new state law which prevents municipalities from barring any particular breed of dog or cat. City officials say they believe the law only applies to future bans.

Animal control officials say the pit bull's owner is from Woonsocket, and was visiting Pawtucket with the dog, which has been placed in quarantine.
