PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) -- The Rhode Island chapter of the American Civil Liberties Union will ask a judge to stop the state Board of Education from holding a private retreat at which they will discuss a new graduation requirement that all students pass a standardized test.
A hearing was scheduled Tuesday afternoon in front of Superior Court Judge Daniel Procaccini.
The board has a closed-door retreat scheduled for Aug. 25-26, and the ACLU says it violates open meetings laws.
Board Chairwoman Eva-Marie Mancuso says it would not violate the law because they won't be discussing anything over which the board has jurisdiction.
The ACLU says any discussion of the policy should be done in public.
It plans to ask the judge to issue a restraining order to stop the retreat from meeting privately.
