WESTPORT, Mass. (AP) -- Officials expect to reopen three beaches on Massachusetts' south coast that were closed to swimming Wednesday after a fisherman reported seeing two sharks.
Swimmers were ordered out of the water at about noon Wednesday at Horseneck Beach and Gooseberry Island in Westport, and Demarest Lloyd State Beach in Dartmouth. The beaches remained opened for onshore activities.
A spokesman for the state Department of Conservation and Recreation, which manages two of the beaches, tells the New Bedford Standard Times that the beaches are expected to reopen to swimming Thursday.
State police said a fisherman using binoculars onshore at Gooseberry Island saw an adult shark and a juvenile shark, with the juvenile closer to shore.
