PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- A federal grand jury has returned an indictment against a 28-year-old U.S. Postal carrier who is accused of stealing items from people's mail, including gift cards and medicine.
Matthew Golatto, 28, of Providence, is charged with delaying delivery of mail and theft of mail, according to United States Attorney Peter F. Neronha.
At different locations in Coventry, investigators recovered a substantial number of mail items, including greeting cards that had been opened, according to a news release from Neronha's office.
The mail was sent to recipients at addresses along Golatto's assigned routes in Coventry.
Investigators recovered a substantial number of pieces of mail, and 36 retail gift cards, from Golatto's personal vehicle, according to court records.
Federal agents also recovered a package that had allegedly been opened which contained medicine mailed from the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs to a Coventry resident, says the news release.
Golatto was released on bond after his arrest and initial appearance before U.S. District Court Judge Magistrate Judge Lincoln D. Almond on July 30. His arraignment on the indictment is scheduled for August 13, 2013.
