SCITUATE, R.I. -- A Pawtucket police officer was arrested Wednesday by Rhode Island State Police on charges that he stole gasoline from the Pawtucket Department of Public Works, a state police news release said Thursday.

Ptlm. Kenneth Provost, 56, of 303 Woodward Ave., Seekonk, Mass., was charged with larceny under $1,500.

Members of the state police financial crimes unit began investigating after Pawtucket Police Chief Paul King asked for assistance. The team reviewed surveillance video and well as gasoline transaction logs and interviewed city employees.

They said Provost circumvented city policies to take more than 200 gallons, valued at $682.83, by filling private vehicles and gas containers from March to May.

He is scheduled to appear in District Court, Providence, on Aug. 23.
