WASHINGTON -- Federal grants worth $11.7 million for public housing were awarded to 25 R.I. cities and towns, U.S. Sen. Jack Reed announced in a news release Thursday.
The money, from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development's Public Housing Capital Fund Program, will go to develop, finance and modernize public housing.
The money will help preserve affordable housing, as well as "build stronger neighborhoods, and put more contractors to work making needed repairs," said Reed, a senior member of the Banking, Housing, and Urban Affairs Committee.
There are about 9,500 public housing units in Rhode Island, he said.
