CHARLESTOWN, R.I. -- The Narragansett Indian tribe's 338th recorded annual August Meeting -- or powwow -- drew hundreds of people to the tribe's reservation Saturday for the two-day event. Some were tribe members returning from across the country.

The "Grand Entry" officially opened the program shortly after 1:30 p.m., with a blur of feathers, fringed deerskin, drumming and dancing, and the lighting of the Medicine Circle.

"We come here under the auspices of our creator, and we offer our prayers, our ceremonies, our dances and our songs," said Hiawatha Brown, who has served as tribal councilman and powwow chairman for several decades.

The Green Corn Thanksgiving festival offered much in the way of food: jonnycakes, corn chowder, fried corn, Indian pudding, buffalo burgers and more.
