WARWICK, R.I. -- The man accused of killing his girlfriend and her adult daughter, then kidnapping his girlfriend's 2-year-old son in Johnston this weekend was ordered held without bail at his arraignment Tuesday in Kent County District Court, Warwick.
Daniel Rodriguez, 28, was arraigned on multiple felonies, including two counts of murder, three counts of using a firearm while committing a crime of violence, one count of burglary, one count of kidnapping and one count of carrying a pistol without a permit.
Rodriguez is accused of forcing his way into a home at 3 Oaktree Drive, Johnston, before 5 a.m. Sunday and fatally shooting his girlfriend, Evelyn Burgos, 40, and her daughter, Vanessa Perez, 25.
Rodriguez allegedly abducted Burgos's son, Isaiah Perez, who was found wandering alone in the Chad Brown housing project Sunday night in Providence.
As is customary at this point in the court proceedings, Rodriguez did not enter a plea.
Rodriguez said little, except to answer questions from Judge Joseph T. Houlihan, during the brief court proceeding. For his address, he gave the house where the women were killed.
It didn't appear as though any members of the victims' families showed up at the arraignment, but a man initially identified as a suspect in the killings appeared briefly in the courtroom.
Malcolm W. Crowell, 22, who had a 4-year-old child with Perez, was spotted in the back of the courtroom before the arraignment. Crowell appeared emotional and left before the arraignment.
The police arrested Crowell Sunday, but later cleared him. They said he was cooperative and tried helping them find the 2-year-old boy.
A bail hearing for Rodriguez is scheduled for Aug. 27.
