PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- State authorities Friday suspended the license of a Newport daycare center where a 17-year-old was accused of molesting a five-year-old girl.

The Department of Children, Youth and Families said it took the action after inspecting the Tender Care Learning Center and finding "several regulatory violations," DCYF Director Janice DeFrances said in a news release.

DeFrances said her agency's investigation will continue.

The suspect, a resident of Newport, was described by police as an unpaid intern at the daycare center. He is being held at the Rhode Island Training School pending an appearance in Family Court.

The alleged assault took place Tuesday. Daycare staff summoned police after viewing video recordings allegedly depicting several acts of molestation, the police said.
