PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- Our weather partners at WPRI are forecasting calm conditions through the start of the weekend, but could that be the calm before the storm?

Meteorologists are keeping a close eye on Hurricane Sandy and say it could affect Southern New England late this weekend into early next week.

Today should bring a mix of sun and clouds and a high of 63.

It could start getting interesting Sunday, when the wind should build and showers develop on Sunday.

The National Weather Service says "confidence continues to increase for impacts from Sanday whether in tropical or post tropical form." The region could see either a close pass or direct hit, the weather service says.

WPRI says, "Based on the latest information, periods of rain likely ... Highs in the upper 50s. Rain will be heavy at times and will be accompanied by strong winds and high surf. A more significant impact is possible... including the potential for damaging winds, beach erosion, coastal and inland flooding and power outages."
