PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- An off-duty Rhode Island State Police trooper made a dramatic arrest Friday when he tackled a suspect fleeing an interrupted burglary.
A resident returning home to 73 Governor St., on the East Side, at about 1:20 p.m. Friday ran outside to call for help, and off-duty Trooper Brent Wilks responded, State Police Supt. Steven G. O'Donnell said in a news release.
Entry and exit were gained by pushing a window air conditioner into the room. The suspect jumped on a bicycle to flee, Wilks pursuing on foot.
Arrested was Edward Lawson, 52, last known to live at 415 Friendship St., Providence. He has a nine-year suspended sentence on a conviction of possessing narcotics with intent to deliver.
