PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Now that Governor Chafee has said he will not seek reelection next year, at least one gubernatorial hopeful is giving himself a wide window to decide whether he's in next year's race.

Cranston Mayor Allan Fung said Monday his decision could come anytime in the next two months.

"I'm not going to let anyone's action dictate what I'm going to do," the Republican said at an unrelated State House event. "I'm seriously considering it. That's why I spent the summer traveling throughout the state listening to people."

Fung said his campaign will have more to say in the coming days about work that's ongoing.

He referenced Providence Mayor and possible Democratic rival Angel Taveras' recent disclosure that his campaign has hired Connectiva, a Latino-focused political consultancy, and headed to Puerto Rico last week to meet with possible supporters.

"I've been traveling personally outside the state, establishing contacts amongst Asian-American groups, just like Angel has been doing with Latino groups," Fung said. "It just takes time to cultivate those relationships. At some point soon you'll be hearing more from us, similar to the news you heard about Angel."
